He was working in Christchurch as an upholsterer for Ballantynes at the time of their disastrous fire on 18 November 1947, one of the greatest fire tragedies in the history of New Zealand, claiming the lives of 41 people. At the time of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh's first visit to New Zealand in 1954, he upholstered the two chairs that were used by them during a church service in the Christchurch Cathedral. The chairs were covered with a beautiful crimson brocade fabric. Photos of the chairs and a description of them appeared in the local newspapers, which also acknowledged the fact that they had been expertly upholstered by Raymond Jackson.
