The Patroclus was sunk by a torpedo from U99, captained by the greatest of all U-boat captains Otto Kretshmer, off the coast of Northern Ireland. U99 had torpedoed SS Casanare. The Patroclus, an armed merchantman went on the attack dropping depth charges. The captain of the Patroclus decided, against advice from his Executive Officer, to stop and pick up survivors, which was against Admiralty orders. The U99 attacked and after firing two torpedoes at the Patroclus he broke off the attack as he was under attack from a Sunderland flying boat. He dived and when he levelled off he found the Patroclus still afloat.
