"While I am still trying to find out about John and Helen, I did come across a John Frater and Janet Forgie married in 1770 in Borrowstounness who went on to have 6 children but recorded as FRAITER.
The children were:
Christian (F) born 1771
John (M) born 1773
Henry (M) born 1776
Jean (F) born 1778
James (M) born 1781 and
Janet (F) born 1786.

Janet may be the daughter of John Forgie and Christian Gourlie and born 1749 in Muiravonside"

Date taken from chart got from Christine. Her source is unknown.
Went to Glasgow about 1817 and died there at the age of 74. In 1855 he was a carpet weaver

28 Aug 2003
Received a letter from Conrad Frater with copy of tree produced by his father Edward C Frater. He has James born 20 M 1781 (M is unknown March or May probably) in Polmont. This is the source for Christine.

Death certificate says:
James Frater (Carpet Weaver) Male 74 years born in Polmont, Stirlingshire 38 years in Glasgow. Son of William Frater Quarryman (deceased). But notes written in to the left of the entry states that father is John. Wife is Margaret Miller deceased. Siblings listed as John 48, Margaret 38, James 35 and WIlliam 33. Death March 22nd 1855 at 10:10 pm. He died at 17 Portugal Street, Glasgow. Died of Bronchitis certified on March 23rd. Informant was William Frater son. Registered on March 24 1855. This is in the district of HUTCHESONTOWN Glasgow, Lanark document 644/10 0275

Buried in Calton Burial Ground, Glasgow. The burial ground was created by the Calton Incorporation of Weavers in 1786, there being many thousand weavers working and living in this part of the city at that time, but the ground was not solely used by them.

email re: James's Burial
Your e-mail enquiry regarding Calton Burial Ground has been forwarded to us by
Glasgow Cemeteries Dept.

I can confirm that James Frater is buried in Calton, date of burial, 25th March
1855, Aged 74, 17 Portugal Street.

There is a lair number, 168, however, there are no complete lair registers in
existence. I am unable to confirm if any other family members are interred in
that lair.

I have checked the lair owners register and it seems that Thomas Hardie who was
a mason from Calton purchased it on November 14th 1790.

The Old Parish Records for Calton include burials 1792-1854, however, these are
arranged by date, not by name.

If you can arrange to view these films, you may discover other family members.

Notes on area of Portugal Street
The Streets of St Mungo, Glasgow (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gordon.adams1/StreetNames.htm)
LAURIESTON. This is a district on the south side of the river, which was feued from the trustees of Hutchesons’ Hospital about the beginning of last century by James Laurie, son of David Laurie, timber merchant, Jamaica Street. It was bounded on the west side by Bridge Street and Eglinton Street, on the east by Buchan Street and Portugal Street, on the south by Cavendish Street, extending north to Carlton Place, at the river side. Mr. Laurie had a penchant for high-sounding English names, and in laying off the lands gave us Bedford, Cavendish, Cumberland, Norfolk, Oxford, Portland, Salisbury, and Warwick Streets. These cognomens have remained, but Bridge Street, which he named Bloomsbury, has got a more suitable title.

Taken from "Glimpses of Glasgow" 1894 by Andrew Aird
PORTUGAL STREET consisted largely of dwelling houses for working people. Its chief building was the Lancasterian School, which never was very popular. What is now known as Eglinton Street United Presbyterian Church had its conception in this institution. Its members met there for worship till the present church was built and ready for divine service. Its site was a gift from Mr. Laurie, of Laurieston.

This is the closest I could find. Does her age seem right to you? Flyter sounds similar enough to Frater. I can see where the clerk might have gotten the name wrong.
