Leslie Arthur Bradley remembers his Grandfather George Jr as a rather grumpy old man who didn’t much like children recalls that George told him that he went to Australia when he was 12. He would have actually been 12 on February 22 1878. He was a small man so quite probably he was a very small boy and would have passed for 9 or 10 in 1878-1880.
On the 1871 Birmingham Census George Sr’s age is given as 40 which would make him 47 in 1878. The 1871 Census gives him as born in Newbury Berkshire. The only George Bradley on the 1851 Birmingham Census (which has a name index) who was born in Newbury is given as lodging with William Liddiard, a gardener from Newbury in Essex Court. This George is said to be 18 which would make him 45 in 1878. In neither Census is he given with a middle name, though this means little as his daughter, Emma Catherine is not given with a middle name either and she certainly had one according to her Memorial Card.
Maureen can’t be certain that the Marriage Certificate for George and Emma that she has is really right— they are telling so many fibs on it that it is difficult to tell how much is true. This means that she can’t be sure about Taplin ( or Japlin ) as the name of his father. The IGI for Warwickshire, Staffordshire gives no one of that name and the Berkshire IGI does not cover all areas of Newbury so till I am able to consult Parish Registers for Newbury at the Public Record Office or in Reading I can’t get any further.
George Jr had fair hair and blue eyes, I believe. (A photo has been received which will be published in due course). There is no photo of George Sr (one in his latter years has been found) but there is a rather faded one of Emma at about 45?. She also seems to be fair but that’s all one can tell from the photo.
